Tech editing a pattern
You've been invited to tech edit a quilt pattern. Here's the workflow, start to finish — about two minutes to read.
Accept your invitation
Click the link in your invitation email, then sign in — or create a tech editoraccount if you're new. You're assigned to the pattern automatically; it appears under Your patterns at /editor. A direct invite like this doesn't require directory approval — you can start right away.
Open the pattern
You'll land on the review view with the latest PDF versionrendered inline, page by page. If the designer hasn't uploaded a PDF yet, you'll see a short message — reach out to them and check back once it's up.
Drop annotation pins
Click anywhere on a page to drop a pin exactly where the issue is. Pick a category — math error, ambiguous instruction, missing piece, diagram problem, typo, preference mismatch, or accessibility — write your note, and click Save pin. It appears numbered on the page and in the sidebar.
Manage your annotations
The sidebar lists every pin. Click a row to jump to it on the page, and use Mark addressed, Dismiss, or Delete as the review evolves. The designer sees the same data live — no send step.
Discuss findings with the designer
The header's Discuss findings button opens a threaded conversation on the pattern. Answer questions, confirm fixes, or push back on a pin the designer dismissed. Comments carry role badges and timestamps, and the designer sees your replies live.
Run a terminology check
The Terminology check button checks pasted pattern text against the designer's preferences snapshot — flagging where terms (HST, QST, WOF, and the rest) are mixed or drift from their house style. Use it to drop precise preference-mismatch pins on the PDF.
A couple of things to know
- Pins are anchored to a version.If the designer uploads a new draft after you've started, you'll review it fresh — your earlier pins stay on the version they were made against.
- Hired through the directory? Your requests, quotes, and deliveries live at /work/engagements. Setting up your public profile is optional for a direct invite like this, but it's what lets other designers find and hire you.
